HISTORY OF THE IDEA OF COPYING: ON KAWARA
While enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago I took the course, "The History of the Idea of Copying" again but as an independent study. The second time around I copied not a master painter but, going against tradition, the contemporary artist On Kawara whose work hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. Not only is he a contemporary painter he’s also a conceptual artist. For me then, the task was not to copy his work identically but to replicate his concept and technique.
